Projection: need to automatically qualify

Delaware State’s profile makes the notion that it will need the conference’s automatic spot feel inevitable because its few bright moments are outweighed by a string of damaging defeats; the win at Longwood and home victories over Delaware and Maryland Eastern Shore demonstrate the team can beat peer opponents, but those are dwarfed by lopsided road losses at Syracuse, Miami and Temple and tough defeats away at Rutgers and St. Joseph’s that highlight its struggles away from home. Nonconference play produced no marquee scalps and included several close setbacks and disappointing home losses that weaken any at-large case, and the remainder of the schedule is dominated by conference dates against Coppin State, Norfolk State, Howard, Morgan State, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State where the only realistic path to the national field runs through winning the conference tournament.
